Mika Penniman is a 26 year old London based singer/songwriter. He was born in Beirut, moved to Paris when he was 1 and eventually settled in London at the age of 8. Mika's childhood wasn't easy, he was bullied because he was different and dropped out of school when he was 11 to finally discover his passion; music. Facing rejection after rejection, Mika finally had his breakthrough in 2007 with his debut album Life in Cartoon Motion including the hits 'Grace Kelly' and 'Relax (Take it easy)'. Recently he returned with his sophomore album The Boy Who Knew Too Much including the anthem 'We Are Golden'. Love him or hate him, Mika has settled into your brain no matter what.

Up close, Mika is a shy boy who replies to our questions in a quiet voice before going on stage. But the 27 year old Anglo-Libanese, who debuted with great success in 2007 with Grace Kelly, is always more and more crazy and theatrical on stage. The thousands of fans who went to his summer gigs in Italy this summer know that all too well.
A new version of his second album The Boy Who Knew Too Much has recently been released exclusively in Italy. It contains the new single Kick Ass (We Are Young) and some rarities. “By now I haven’t stopped for a year and a half.” he tells Sorrisi. “The record has sold a million and a half copies but I gained that by working like mad.”
The record’s less commercial than the previous one…
“Of course, but it was an artistic choice that I couldn’t renounce. It isn’t a banal record, it’s not very radio friendly. As an artist I refuse to follow the current trend.”
Your audience spans many generations: children, adolescents, adults. How do you explain that?
“It depends on the fact that my songs, that don’t appear serious, deal with important and universal themes such as lonelyness, drugs, sexuality.”
Your new single deals with a superhero and is part of the soundtrack to the film “Kick Ass”. But do you like comics?
“Yes, but I don’t like the films they make of them. On the big screen the superheroes are always repressed. There’s real violence, there’s no sex.”
Just to let you know there won’t be any updates until Wednesday next week. Tomorrow I will head for Scotland to attend Mika’s gig and also party with my fellow freaks and won’t have time to update. No worries, we will be back before you know it and I shall try to ask Mika if he has seen the video!
LIKE Marmite, John Gibson’s column and swingers clubs, Mika is an acquired taste.
To some, he’s a pauper’s Prince; goofily camp, theatrically flamboyant, and irritating as hell. For others, he is a musical genius; a natural born pop star, with an innate gift for writing melodies that lodge themselves in the brain.
You either love or loathe him – and that’s just the way the Anglo-Lebanese singer wants it.
“If you don’t understand my music it’s obviously not meant for you,” says the 26-year-old, speaking ahead of his Edge Festival gig at the HMV Picture House on Monday. “My music is not calculated. It is a product of circumstance.
“It might appeal to you because of the life you’ve had,’ he continues, ‘or because you relate to the stories. But my music is not fashion. It’s not sound. It’s not scene. I was never accepted into a scene. I tried! And I would have liked it! But I can’t and I just don’t know how to do it. I don’t know how to make any other type of music than the music I make.”
POP singer Mika is grooming his dog for the superstar lifestyle – by teaching her to fly.
The flamboyant star is training his dog for the tiring star routine of constant touring by putting her on planes, trains and automobiles.
Mika admitted to The Razz that he gets lonely on tour and needs his trusty golden retriever by his side.
He said: “I’m working on my third record and also trying to train my dog.
“The idea is the dog is going to come on tour with me so basically a friend of mine is putting her on planes and driving her around to get her used to the travelling.
“Isn’t that the most ridiculous thing ever? It’s such a funny picture but that way she won’t freak out when she goes on tour.
“The idea is to have her on tour everywhere. I think I need a dog and it will make things better on the road.”
